What Is a Penile Prosthesis?
Surgical Procedure and Prosthesis Types
A penile prosthesis is a surgical procedure used in the treatment of permanent erectile dysfunction. In this procedure a specially designed prosthesis is implanted in the penis. Prosthesis types include inflatable and semi-rigid models. Inflatable prostheses produce an erection when filled via a pump and reservoir system, while semi-rigid prostheses maintain partial rigidity permanently. The type of prosthesis is determined by the patient's preference and medical condition.
- Three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis
- One-piece malleable penile prosthesis
Eligibility Criteria
Penile prosthesis treatment is recommended when other treatment options have failed. Men with permanent erectile dysfunction due to diabetes, heart disease, prostate cancer treatment, Peyronie's disease or trauma may be candidates for this treatment. Erectile dysfunction that significantly affects quality of life may also be another eligibility criterion.
Possible Risks and Side Effects
Like every surgical procedure, penile prosthesis surgery carries certain risks: infection, bleeding, pain and loss of sensation. Displacement of the prosthesis, leakage or mechanical failure may also occur, which is why it is important that it is performed by an experienced surgeon. Side effects may include difficulty urinating, deformity of the penis and changes in appearance.
