Chronic Prostatitis

Chronic Prostatitis - Assoc. Prof. Muhsin Balaban, Urology and Andrology Specialist

Chronic prostatitis is a clinical picture that causes more than one complaint in the patient as a result of inflammation arising in the prostate tissue.

The prostate's job in men is to help with urinary continence and to produce the fluid that protects the sperm cells. The real handicap in prostatitis, however, is the anatomical location of the prostate in the body. The cavernous nerve network running to the penis and the vascular structures responsible for erection are directly related to the prostate. Likewise, because the prostate sits directly beneath the bladder, inflammation in the prostate tissue can impair the quality of urination and create a constant urge to urinate.

Contrary to what is thought, this disease is very common and is often left undiagnosed, because in chronic prostatitis there is not a single complaint but a cluster of complaints. For this reason chronic prostatitis has begun to be defined under the name Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome.

The most frequent trigger of the disease is gonorrhoea developing after unprotected sexual intercourse, with the acquired microbe settling in the prostate and causing continuous inflammation. However, trauma that can damage the prostate, cold weather and intense emotional stress can also cause non-bacterial inflammation in the prostate tissue.

Worldwide, the time to a definitive diagnosis of chronic prostatitis is about two years. During this period the patient may experience severe perineal pain, discomfort when sitting, severe burning in the penis and pain in the perineum after ejaculation, testicular pain, loss of libido, very frequent urination or erectile dysfunction.

Many methods have been tried in the treatment of chronic prostatitis, but unfortunately simply prescribing antibiotics and treating the disease like a simple infection causes it to become chronic and resistant.

After treating a large number of chronic prostatitis patients over the last five years, I defined the ‘ISTANBUL PROSTATITIS TREATMENT PROTOCOL’.

This treatment protocol lasts approximately three weeks, and the treatment dose is adjusted for each patient according to the intensity of the complaints.
